I don’t have a steering wheel lock. Since the Owners manual went into a long laundry list of things to do I sent Jeep an email asking for clarification. Had they stopped after the second paragraph I would’ve been happy. However, they continued on regurgitating the owners manual and continuing to confuse the issue. Here is what they sent me:
Jul 18, · Hi everyone I’m bringing my barn find home in a few weeks and was wondering if anyone has used a tow bar to pull a B. I am going to weld one up from scratch.
Polk A motor home offers us the freedom to explore the open road. We can go where we want when we want. But what happens when we arrive at a destination where we plan to stay put for a day, a week or a month? How do explore the area, or take a quick trip to the grocery store? Well, we have our bikes with us right! Bikes are nice and we even get some much needed exercise, but are they really practical for touring the surrounding area or taking a day trip?
Probably not, so what do we do? One option is to disconnect everything from the motor home and take it. What a pain this can be just for a loaf of bread. Another option is to tow a vehicle behind the motor home. Now when we need a loaf of bread or want to take a day trip we have our transportation. This makes much more sense, but just how do we do this?

View Photo Gallery 12 Photos When traveling with an RV, half the fun is getting there while the other half is getting around once you’ve arrived. When towing a trailer or fifth wheel you simply unhook the RV and use your tow vehicle for sightseeing and other daily transportation. When traveling by motorhome you are motorized, so it’s just not possible to take it apart and use one half as your local transportation.
For this reason the majority of motorhome owners prefer to tow a small vehicle behind the motorhome. This vehicle can be anything from an economical car to a serious off-road capable SUV, or anything in between depending on what type of recreation the RVer is looking for. Not every vehicle is capable of being flat towed and the majority of the time it is due to limitations of that particular vehicle’s driveline. In some cases driveshaft disconnects or electric transmission lube pumps can be added to prevent transmission or transfer case damage so that these vehicles can be flat towed.
In some cases it’s just not possible to flat tow that particular vehicle and a tow dolly may need to be used. However, there are a large number of vehicles that are capable of being flat towed with no modifications to their driveline. Various on-line charts are available, such as those published by Family Motor Coach Association, that will list which vehicles are capable of being flat towed and which are not.
We wanted to tow this vehicle to the various off-road destinations, so I set this vehicle up for towing. Once you have determined that you have a vehicle that can be flat towed, the next question is what you need to have to be able to tow that vehicle. There are four main areas that need to be addressed: Towbars Defined Towbars have come a long way since the original A-frame devices that attached to the front of the towed vehicle and swung down to connect to the RV with a ball hitch coupler.

The tension of the tow line must remain essentially constant throughout each phase of the towed flight, other than steady changes as the tow progresses in accordance with the recommendations in this manual.

I usually rely on AAA or Allstate Motor Club to get towed home if there a mechanical failure but I really wanted my own trailer or tow dolly. Especially when buying a project car or donor vehicle that doesn’t run. I don’t really have the space for a full size trailer so a tow dolly seemed like the perfect answer. I found out that many mobile homes use Dexter axles in the 5, to 10, lb range. Even though they have 5 lug star type split rims you can swap the drums for a standard 6 lug Chevy pattern and even the brakes work without modifications.
I had some nice rims left over from a blazer project so all I needed was steel. I was working at John Deere and noticed a lot of heavy equipment comes on frames made of heavy duty tubing. Try asking your local distributor and you may get it for free. There was a welding shop next door with plenty of metal for sale cheap too.
They’ll probably discount the welding on the frame if you buy metal from them. Add Tip Ask Question Step 1: Simple Is Better I didn’t go with swiveling joints or any nonsense like that.

Dominator Tow Bar
When you brake while towing a vehicle behind an RV, stopping distance is increased due to the weight of the vehicle and it’s momentum pushing against the RV. The ReadyBrake uses this energy to compress a shock and spring inside it which allows an actuator arm to move forward, pulling down your towed vehicle brake pedal with an attached cable. It takes a few hundred pounds of pressure to activate the ReadyBrake, so the towed vehicle will follow the RV down a steep mountain grade only applying brakes when you do.
After initial install, only an adjustable sling cable is used to connect or disconnect the ReadyBrake. We recommend leaving about 2 inches of slack in the adjustable sling cable to keep the brake from activating while going over dips like at a gas station.
