The Dos and Don’ts of Dating a Recovering Addict

My ex bf began taking cocaine at age 10 as well as drinking and having sex. His parents sent him to a rehab in grade 9 but when he got out he became a dealer and ended up doing time in jail. He moved back to the city where we went to school 10 years later and begged to take me on a date. Their were so many ups and downs in the relationship taking money from me, selling his possessions ect. I stuck by him no matter how long he went without talking to me or what he did. I took him on a carribean vacation and a week after we got home I was waiting for him to come over and he broke up with me when I called to ask where he was. He always will choose going on benders with his friends over seeing me or any other normal activity.

Mar 22,  · My ex boyfriend uses Meth, I didnt know it was an addction until the last few months of our 3 year long INTENSE & PASSIONATE relationship. There was a jail stint & rehab during our realtionship. And two pregnant women immedialty after our break up.

Thanks for the reply. What ur saying makes perfect sense, but it seems like im so far away from ever being able to do it. Ive heard people talk about addict relationships, but i never cared becuz i didnt consider myself an addict. Now im not so sure. It really hurt to see it becuz i dont want to be one of “those people” a “sick” person. I don’t believe too many of us actually grow up healthy and functional. The thing is we don’t have to identify with those traits

Jan 30, , You have to think safety first, and the unpredictable nature of your husband and his friends, it may be the best thing to do temporarily. While I agree that he needs to be ready able and willing to get help to turn his life around, it is not an impossible task. What bothers me is that we, as a society, are so quick to judge others and dump people cold when they have addictions.

If it were somebody refusing their insulin, or heart medication, or a depressed person unable to get out of bed in the morning, would we be so quick to judge, and advise people to just leave? While I realize, as I’ve said, and others have too, that you will have to seriously consider finding a safe place for yourself and your child, there are things you can do to maintain a lifeline to your boyfriend, if you choose that route, and I hope you do. The first thing I would do is seek out counselling for yourself from a qualified addiction counsellor.

Learn how to deal with your partner, set limits, boundaries, expectations, etc. Find a way to separate yourself from the addictive lifestyle you have found yourself in, and work out ways to create the life you want, with him, without drugs. Think of it as building a foundation.

Someone I am seeing lets call him Bob was a daily meth user for about 5 years don’t want to go into specific time frames about 5 years ago. Bob is functioning very well, very responsible, has a ‘good’ well paying job and is a good person not sayng meth users aren’t good people, but you get my point. Bob has relapsed about 5 times in the past year including smoking and snorting. I have used speed with them a few times, but have decided not to anymore, for my own health and for Bob’s health, as I believe any kind of amphetamine is not good for a former meth addict.

The other day Bob told me he smoked ice earlier that day, but did not use a large amount or stay awake for days. He also told me a few of weeks ago, but the stuff he smoked did not get him high as it was poor quality. In other words, it is pretty much impossible to hide his use from me, and he is always honest anyway. When Bob was a daily ice user he smoked it, and he says this is the worst way for him to do it as it is more addictive than snorting.

I am worried because Bob has been snorting speed kind of regularly in the past 3 months sometimes a couple of weekends in a row, sometimes every second or third weekend etc.

We ate family dinners at the table, taught our children manners and took family vacations. My husband and I were blessed to have very good jobs. My daughter, Brittany, the beautiful girl in the photo, was the honor roll student, the volunteer at the city parks and recreation department and loved playing sports. Hi guys, thank you for your prompt responses. I do not believe he could be relapsing. We live a very close life, and I would know if he was using again. But he has some very meth-like behaviors. Apparantly he enjoyed meth very much and has an erroneous belief that it helps you focus, etc so he doesn’t think that acting with meth behaviors is bad or that other people would or should be annoyed by it.

He picks his skin too, I will find bruises on his arms and legs from him picking the follicles out. But it’s not excessive to the point where he has scabs or anything. But knowing his history I get upset when I find the bruises. I sometimes call him Mr. Spock because he speaks like he has no emotion lots of the time, and he doesn’t find pleasure in things like I do.

It has become very annoying.
